Clinical Peels FAQ’s
Are Clinical Peels safe?
Yes. As long as your skin is suitable, prepared appropriately and the recommended aftercare instructions are followed.
Can anyone have one done?
Our peels range from ‘today peels’ that most people can have done with little to no preparation beforehand, to more advanced ‘tomorrow peels’ which will require a certain degree of preparation at home for up to 4 weeks before a peel. Not all skins will be suited to certain peels and your therapist will do a thorough consultation to determine to right one for you.
Do they leave the skin red and oozing? (remember Samantha on THAT episode of Sex & The City?)
No. Those sort of peels have more of an ablative effect. The epidermis (upper layers of the skin) is partially or completely removed and will take around two weeks to heal.
Our Clinical Peels actually initiate an exfoliating response which occurs over several days whereby your epidermis is still intact. You may experience some mild pinkness to the skin but it normally resolves within an hour or so.
What effects should I expect from a peel?
Slight sensitivity for the first 3 days and possible dryness or mild flaking from days 4 to 5. Occasionally if there is hyper-pigmentation in the skin this can appear darker post-peel as it moves closer to the surface of the skin to be eradicated. After 1 to 2 weeks the skin will be smoother, more even, and brighter.
How long is my skin sensitive after a peel?
Normally 3 – 5 days depending on the type of peel. Sometimes you may experience flaking for up to 7 days.
Are they suitable for finer skin types?
Yes. We offer several types of peels. Your therapist will recommend the one most suited to your skin type.
Will my skin look dramatically different after one peel?
No. It takes at least 3 – 6 treatments to see a significant change. Depending on the skin condition and your concerns it can take up to 12 treatments along with ongoing maintenance treatments. However, your skin will generally look brighter, smoother and healthier after your first peel.
Does it help problematic skin conditions?
Yes. The exfoliation assists with removing dead skin cell build up that can be clogging and congesting pores. It also helps to regulate oil flow.
Will I break out after a treatment?
Potentially. It is more common for problematic skin types to break out after a peel. This is caused by the purging of the pores as the skin exfoliates and rejuvenates. Sometimes it has to get worse before it can get better.
Will wrinkles actually reduce?
Yes. As we age and with sun damage our skin doesn’t naturally exfoliate and renew as efficiently and leads to a build up that gives the appearance of uneven superficial fine lines and wrinkles. Clinical Peels will speed up the exfoliation process leading to a smoother, more refined and younger looking skin allowing fresh healthy cells to appear.
Deep wrinkles or dynamic lines may be softened somewhat For the most superior results it is strongly advised you follow a treatment program that includes multiple treatment types. Your therapist will discuss this with you.
Do they remove freckles?
Yes. They are very effective at reducing superficial hyper-pigmentation, sun damage and uneven skin colour and tone. There are several varieties of pigmentation, with some very challenging to eradicate. Your therapist will advise you what sort of results to expect. Sun protection is essential when treating skin discoloration disorders. A sun block will be required during and after the treatment as well as a pigment-inhibiting product for ongoing prevention of future hyper-pigmentation.
